Sewing needles are the kind of item you need in the house whether you are a seamstress, quilter, occasional sewer or non-sewer. We all need some sewing needles and thread just in case a button needs to be replaced or for some other small repair sewing job.

Sewing needles are also something that can last a long time and if you are a regular sewer, quilter or crafter you can accumulate quite a collection. There are so many different types of sewing needles that come in different sizes, shapes and have different sized needle heads. It is nice to have a collection organized and stored in such a way that you can easily find just the right needle you are looking for and just as easily put it back where you found it.

I came up with a very easy to make storage solution for a sewing needle collection. It is a no sew project and what is even better is it is made using felt. Felt fabric is so easy to work with because the edges do not fray. It is also fun to work with because the fabric has a very soft and plush feeling. But at the same time it is a sturdy fabric that allows the needles to stay put when inside the storage case.

I want to thank Kunin Felts and Fabrics for sponsoring this post. They have quite a wide selection of felt on their site to choose from. I ended up selecting several different colours and making several different cases to keep for myself and give away as handy to have unique homemade gifts!

It is amazing how you can change the look with different felt and washi tape colours!

This post is also part of this month’s #12MonthsofDIY. I have teamed up with eleven other talented Canadian DIY bloggers and each month we come up with a new DIY using the same material. This month’s DIY material is the fabric felt. At the end of this post you find links to all of the other projects and the instructions for how to make them. You are also invited to join us on Instagram and add your felt project to the hashtags #12Monthsof DIY and #JulyFelt. You can find me here on Instagram. I would love to have you!

The other materials I used to make the no sew felt sewing needle storage case are glitter washi tape and white self-adhesive shelf liner. I chose to use glitter washi tape because it is what I had in the house and I liked that it was opaque and not semi-transparent like some washi tape can be. But you can also use any kind of patterned or non-glitter solid washi tape. I also want to recommend that you use self-adhesive shelf liner that is quite thick. I tried two different brands that ended up having two different degrees of thickness. Interestingly the less expensive roll that I bought at the dollar store produced much better results for this project compared to the more expensive brand name product.

Here are the instructions for how to make a…

No Sew Felt Sewing Needle Storage Case

Materials

  • 9” x 12” felt
  • 12” x 2-1/2” strip of white self-adhesive shelf liner
  • binder clip
  • washi tape
  • label maker
  • fabric glue
  • ruler
  • scissors

Instructions

Step 1

Fold felt in half lengthwise. Press fold with an iron. Make sure the open edges of the folded felt are at the top when working.

Step 2

Apply the strip of white self-adhesive shelf liner using fabric glue. I just ran a thin line of glue as close as possible to the long edges of the shelf liner. You will notice this strip is longer than the felt so the glue will need to be applied to where the felt ends on the shorter side edges. The glue will not be visible when it is completely dry.

Step 3

Apply the washi tape along the edges of the self-adhesive shelf liner. The purpose of the washi tape is to hide the edge of the self-adhesive shelf liner and add decoration to the no sew felt sewing needle storage case.

Step 4

Trim the excess self-adhesive shelf liner and washi tape with sharp scissors so it is even with the felt edges.

Step 5

Decorate the binder clip by applying a strip of washi tape to both sides.

You can also apply two different colours of washi tape to create a fun decorative look!

Step 6

Fold the almost completed sewing needle case in half lengthwise. Apply a label ‘Sewing Needles’ to the left side near the fold. The label maker I used is detailed in Upright Freezer Organizing Ideas . Add the sewing needles to the inside making sure to only go through one layer of the felt. Use the binder clip on the right side to secure everything together.

Final Comments: That is it! That is how to make a “No Sew Felt Sewing Needle Storage Case”. It is so easy and so useful. I also need to add that Kunin Felts and Fabrics are made from Eco-fi® 100% polyester fiber made from post-consumer plastic bottles. So this is one of the ways some of the disposable water bottles that we take to the bottle depot are repurposed!

Disclosure: I was compensated by Kunin Felt And Fabrics for this post. However, the opinions expressed are my own. I only recommend products and companies that I use and love myself.

Your Turn: Now it is time to see the rest of the DIY projects using felt from my Canadian blogging friends!

What a clever and fun way to store those needles that always seem to end up at the bottom of my sewing basket, so much safer too! Thank you for sharing your very detailed tutorial.

      July 23, 2016 at 8:15 am

Thank you Laurie! I agree with your comment about the safety. The felt really secures the needles so it is harder to get poked by those sharp needles!

What a cute idea! I regularly poke myself digging into my tickle trunk trying to find my needles – I think something like this is definitely needed, LOL:)

Thank you Heather! The soft fabric really controls the sharpness of the needles! So appreciate you stopping by!

I love a great no sew project. This is such a great idea, and so useful. I always have to hunt for my bigger needles and can only ever find the smaller sizes that I NEVER use. I need to make this myself, any excuse to use glitter washi tape! I loved using this felt too.

You brought up so many good points and reasons for having a sewing needle case and especially one that does not need sewing skills! You are so correct about never finding the right size needle when you need it. I too loved working with this felt. It is so soft and sturdy at the same time. I also love working with washi tape. Any excuse to work with the glitter kind! Thanks for your lovely comment Brooke!

I’m actually at the cottage now wishing I had brought my sewing needles to do some odd sewing jobs (buttons, repairs, that’s sort of thing). This storage case would have come in handy when I was packing to come here! And it’s great that you can use scrap pieces of felt to make this too!

You are so on point Sonja. This sewing needle storage case is perfect for travel and what a great way to use up scraps! Thank you so much for your input!
