Easy Rustic DIY Candle Centerpiece ~ Make a candle centerpiece for indoor or outdoor use using real or faux battery operated candles in just a few minutes!
I am so happy it is summer! I love being able to spend a lot of time outside during the day. Even more so I love being able to sit outside on the patio watching the sun go down and after it has set sitting in the dark watching the night sky. I have to admit that show can be a lot prettier than what has been on television lately.
We are fortunate to have a covered patio underneath the upper deck in the backyard. It is furnished like a living room with outdoor furniture and a variety of outdoor planters. Three of the planters are filled with trailing nasturtiums and gosh they are pretty. I share how easy and inexpensive it is to grow these planters in How To Grow Nasturtiums Outdoor Planters . There are also photographs of the entire patio living space.
One thing we do not have in our patio living space are patio lights. We prefer sitting in the dark looking at the stars with just a few candles providing a subdued and soft glowing light. We also prefer having faux battery operated candles instead of real candles. The reasons are because of safety and convenience. We can turn easily turn on and off the candles without having to monitor several live flames.
I have collected five battery operated candles over the years. Three of the candles I have had for such a long time I cannot remember where I bought them. Two of the candles were purchased recently and came in a box of four that I bought for another outdoor decorating DIY project. Outdoor Porch Spring Decorating Ideas shows you how I used them inside two IKEA lanterns. Not only are they battery operated but they also have the convenient option of being set to a timer.
I also received a rustic wooden basket a few years ago as a retirement gift from some of my work friends. They had filled the wooden basket with a collection of herbs. I can tell my friends put a lot of thought into this gift and I love that I can use it several different ways:
Now I am using it as a candle centerpiece for the outdoor patio! I used a wooden basket as the base to create this easy rustic DIY candle centerpiece. But there are several other options. You can use a rustic looking wooden or metal tray or box. I just recommend the sides of whatever you use not be too high so you do not see the candles or too low so the artificially dyed Spanish moss does not stay put.
I know life can get so busy sometimes it is hard to get the basics done like work, commuting, grocery shopping, house cleaning and kid care. There is often very little time to get to the fun things like crafting and DIY projects to add special touches to your home décor. I can honestly say this project literally took minutes, was super easy to do and adds a lovely décor accent to the patio. Here is how to make an…
Easy Rustic DIY Candle Centerpiece
- rustic wooden basket, wooden tray or box, metal tray or box
- dry cleaning bag, plastic wrap or wax paper
- 5 small glass dishes or cooking prep bowls
- 5 different height pillar candles (real or battery-operated)
- artificially dyed Spanish moss
Line the bottom of the wooden basket with plastic or wax paper. I used a folded dry cleaning bag. This first step makes it easier to clean the Spanish moss which can get quite messy.
Arrange five small glass dishes inside the wooden basket. This step is important because it creates a reserved space for each candle and a solid base for the candles to rest on. I have several of these little glass dishes that I bought at the dollar store. I use them for cooking and crafting.
Place a candle inside each small dish.
Fill all of the open spaces around the candles with the Spanish moss making sure to hide the plastic at the bottom and the small glass dishes.
Your easy rustic DIY candle centerpiece is done! As long as you have all of your materials gathered before starting it will literally take minutes to complete. We are using ours on our outdoor patio for the summer season. I really like how it turned out so much I am thinking I will freshen it up with some new artificially dyed Spanish moss and bring it inside for the kitchen table!
Green is the colour theme and this vase filled with green glass gems and Baby’s Breathe is a perfect decor addition for the outdoor patio too!
I love how it looks during the day…
… and how it looks at dusk. If you look through the reflection in the door window you can see some of the night sky colours!
Final Comments: If you have been following me for a while you will know that I am a Canadian blogger. Today is the day we celebrate Canada Day! Our country this year will officially be 149 years old! I had some fun adding a Canadian touch to my outdoor planters in the front walkway.
We also have plans to be outside around 11:00 pm to watch the Canada Day fireworks. We are lucky to be able to watch them from the comfort of our own outdoor patio with a glass of red wine!
