IKEA Themed Baby Shower Gift Idea ~ Ideas for how to create a special baby shower gift with a shopping trip to the IKEA children’s department!
I recently was invited to a baby shower for a young very dear friend who soon was going to have a baby. I had not been to a baby shower for quite some time so it was a lot of fun to shop for baby shower gift items!
I tend to have a couple of things in mind when I am looking for something special for the new baby. It is nice when a gift registry is established to find out what is needed and wanted which is what this Mom-to-be did. It is also nice when a group of people get together to pool their money to give a larger pricier gift. We always did this in my work setting. On the other hand, I have to admit I love watching the guest of honour open up all of the individual gifts. Gosh it is a lot of fun looking at all of the cute little outfits, toys and baby accessories.
When I do give a gift independently I like to give a couple of things. I like to give something that the baby can use on the earlier side and something else they can use when they are a bit older. Babies grow so quickly and in reality can only wear that cute little dress or tiny little sneakers for a short time. I also try not to give something that is specific for a season. It is hard to time it right if it is an outfit like a little short set for summer or a warm sweater for winter. The baby may outgrow the little short set even before summer arrives and never had a chance to wear it.
I was in IKEA a little while ago and it was one of those shopping trips where I ended up buying a lot more than was on my shopping list. Can you relate? I did buy a new lamp for my craft room which was on my list but I also bought three black pots and made them into Make Your Own Beautiful House Number Flower Pots, a new coat rack for the mudroom, two outdoor lanterns that you see in Outdoor Porch Spring Decorating Ideas as well as some other items that may end up on future blogs.
IKEA does an amazing job marketing their products. One of the ways is how they have you weave your way through the entire store unless you know their shortcuts so you pretty well have to walk through every department. I did not have baby related items on my mind for this shopping trip at all. But when I was walking through the children’s department inspiration struck. I had my gift idea for the upcoming baby shower. I chose to give an IKEA themed baby shower gift.
This department is filled with all kinds of items for children starting at age 0 up till they are no longer children. I also loved that the choices were not too expensive so I was able to create a collection of little gifts to give as one big gift that was easy to do on my budget. I also loved that most of the items are non-gender so if you did not know the sex of the baby there were lots of fun and cute choices. I was easily able to pick out a few things for the baby to use when it is younger and some more items to use when it is older. Here is my…
IKEA Themed Baby Shower Gift Idea
BÖRJA plastic baby spoons, bowl, plate and sippy cup for when baby is younger.
KALAS plastic cutlery, bowls, plates, and cups for when baby is older.
A package of two super-duper KLADD PRICKAR bibs for when baby starts enjoying messy solid foods like chocolate cake with icing, ice cream or strawberries!
FÖRSIKTIG stepping stool for when baby is a toddler.
OLIVTRÄD blanket made from a blue and white star fleece fabric. This cozy fleece blanket that can be used anytime for any purpose and at any age. I was even thinking this blanket might become baby’s future comfort object. I have always been fascinated about children and comfort objects. When I was teaching I would talk to my young students about their comfort objects and I never came across a student that did not have one. This Today’s Parent article All About Comfort Objects gives some good information about this topic.
I have to admit I was a bit worried about my oldest daughter, Toni who did not latch onto her comfort object until she was three years old. I was very pregnant with my second daughter at the time. Toni was out for the day with her Oma, my mother and they were shopping at a thrift store which was one of my mother’s favourite past times. I guess I got my enjoyment for thrifting from her. It was during this shopping trip my three-year-old daughter found her special comfort object that cost my mother a whopping $1.00. It was a doll with a plastic head, arms and legs and a soft body. It did not come with any clothes and one of the arms had to be re-attached because it was about to fall off. Toni felt that if her mommy was going to have a new baby soon to look after she should have her own baby to look after too. It was no surprise Toni named her baby ‘Baby’ and it became her special comfort object throughout her childhood.
A short time later Brittany was born but when and how she found her comfort object was a completely different story. She found hers when she was three months old. It was a teddy bear about the size of her at the time she received as a baby shower gift. Brittany eventually named her teddy bear ‘Fuzz’ and the two were inseparable all through her childhood. I still find it fascinating that I had one child find her comfort object at three years of age and a second one at three months of age. You just never know.
A final item I bought at IKEA was their classic IKEA shopping bag to use as the gift bag! All of the gift items fit perfectly inside.
I filled the top with some white tissue paper purchased at the dollar store.
Then I secured to the two handles with two large bows made for white sheer tulle ribbon.
I had this ribbon leftover from the wedding gift I had wrapped for this same Mom-To-Be who got married last summer. Inexpensive Large Wedding Gift Wrapping Ideas!
The IKEA shopping bag has loads of possibilities to be reused for other purposes. If the new Mom wants she can even tie the two tulle ribbons somewhere in the baby room or reuse it on another gift. Final Words: I had a lot of fun shopping and wrapping for the IKEA themed baby show gift idea! I also had a lot of fun at the baby shower. It was hosted by Sylvia who is also the blogger behind the blog Home and Bliss. The theme for the shower was a Kate Spade theme and all of her special touches were fabulous including the décor, the food, and the specially ordered Kate Theme inspired cake. She shares some of the photos in Hosting A Budget Friendly Baby Shower and there is a fabulous photo of Carleen, the beaming Mom-To-Be. It is so worth checking out!
Your Turn: What are your favourite baby shower gifts to give? Do you have any guidelines that help you chose what to buy? What was you comfort object when you were a child? Mine was a teddy bear that I named ‘Bear’ and yes, I still have him tucked away in the closet in my bedroom. Do or did your children have comfort objects? What did they choose and what names were they given?
