Easy DIY Vehicle Registration Insurance Organizer ~ Keep important vehicle documents in the glove compartment stored in this easy to make organizer.
I had a situation a few years ago where I needed to have the necessary vehicle registration and insurance papers quickly available. Several years ago I was driving on a secondary highway early one morning on my way to attend a meeting. It was the weekend after daylight saving time started so I was up earlier than usual and not feeling completely mentally sharp. I was the only one on the highway except for another vehicle coming from the other direction. Unfortunately for me it was the sheriff. I knew he was going to pull me over when I saw his lights go on and I could see him turn around and head in my direction. When I looked at my speedometer I was indeed speeding something that I did not notice as I was cruising down the highway. So I pulled over and shaking like a leaf reached over to the glove compartment to pull out my registration and insurance papers. The glove compartment was mess with other stuff in there hiding the small car registration and insurance papers. It took me a little while to find what I needed while the officer was standing outside my driver side window patiently waiting. After that I made sure to have the glove compartment a lot more organized and the necessary papers easily accessible if I ever had to pull them out again.
One thing I did was to make an organizer that would have a special place and be easy to see in the glove compartment. Here are my instructions for an…
Easy DIY Vehicle Registration Insurance Organizer
- 12” x 12” cardstock paper (I used plain white but any colour will work)
- washi tape (3/4” wide)
- washi tape (1/2” wide)
Turn up one side of the cardstock about 3-1/4 inches and press the folded edge firmly. Fold the pouch in half. Press this new fold firmly with your fingers.
Staple both ends with two staples close to the edge.
Apply the ¾” wide washi tape around all four sides. Try to apply the tape evenly on the outside and inside being sure to cover the exposed staples.
Tip: I like to extend the tape past both edges when applying the tape. Then I trim the extra ends off using the straight edge of the paper as my guide.
Apply a strip of the ¾” washi tape on the inside pocket along the edge.
Label the front of the organizer with the year, make and model of the vehicle.
Label the left side of the inside pocket with ‘registration’ and the right side of the inside pocket with ‘insurance’.
Now you have an easy DIY vehicle registration insurance organizer that fits perfectly in your glove compartment! You can store your vehicle registration, insurance documentation and any other relevant papers in this organizer. I also added the business card of my insurance agent and the contact numbers for my insurance company.
This is a very easy DIY vehicle registration insurance organizer to make. I made one for every member of the family in different colours for their vehicles!
Final Comments: I used a label maker to label the organizer but you can use your own method. Using a felt marker to label the information is just as effective. I also used washi tape to secure the ends and hide the staples. The washi tape also made it look more visible making it easier to see in the glove compartment.
The washi tape I used is leftover from other projects. You may recognize the teal blue tape from Upright Freezer Organizing Ideas. The black washi tape is leftover from Easy DIY Desktop Printer Shelf. The pink and green washi tape were used in other projects that you will see in upcoming blog posts.
There is actually research showing that there are more traffic violations and accidents the day after Daylight Saving Time has started. You can read about it more in Daylight Saving Time Arrives This Weekend. I am not making excuses for myself. There is no excuse for speeding no matter what time of day, what time of year and on what type of road. Yes I paid the fine and fortunately have not been pulled over since. But if I ever am again, I know exactly where to find the necessary papers in my easy DIY vehicle registration insurance organizer!
This would also make a fun homemade gift for the family member or friend who just bought a new vehicle. A new easy DIY vehicle registration insurance organizer would look great in the new glove compartment of the new vehicle!
Your Turn: How do you store your vehicle registration insurance papers? Do your hands shake just as mine when you are pulled over by law enforcement?
