Black Granite Kitchen Island With Green And White Decor ~ Freshen up a basic black granite kitchen island with inexpensive bright green and white decor!
I am fortunate to have a very large kitchen with a very large kitchen island. It isn’t your typical type of Kitchen Island. It is an irregular shape comprised of two sections. Each section is a different height. The lower section is about 43 inches x 41 inches and is a perfect space for preparing food. The higher section is about 70 inches by 41 inches wide and this is where the gas Thermador range is installed. The entire kitchen island is about 10 feet long.
Just over a year ago we had some flood damage in our kitchen. It was amazing the damage one faulty dripping faucet can do. Not only did the kitchen cabinet have to be replaced but also so did the sink and all of the countertops. Luckily the hardwood floor was not damaged. That would have created a whole other level of restoration work because most of the main floor is an open design where one living space flows into the other. You can get an idea of how the main floor looks in Classic And Contemporary Christmas Tour 2014. You can also read more about our restoration adventure in I Have Become An Accidental Reluctant Home Renovator.
I decided to go with black granite because the kitchen cupboards are a light colour and the tile black splash is a basic off white. It was very interesting watching the granite company carry in and install the huge sections of black granite. When the installation was complete, the black added a nice contrast to the lighter wood on the kitchen cabinets and hardwood floor as well as the lighter tile backsplash. But it was a lot of black and it needed to be freshened up with some bright colours.
When I searched through Google and Pinterest for Kitchen Island decorating ideas I saw a lot of things I loved. I love the images with very tall candleholders and candles or floral bouquets in the middle of the island. But the practical side in me looked at these gorgeous ideas and decided these were not good choices. My kitchen island is a space for storage and food preparation. I love the workflow it offers with a large lower area for preparing the food and a few steps away another large area for cooking the food. I needed green and white accessories to freshen up the black granite that were practical, decorative and easy on the budget.

My Black Granite Kitchen Island With Green And White Decor
Here you can see the length of the kitchen island with the two sections from one direction….
… and here is how it looks from the other direction.
For the most part the green and white kitchen accessories on this black granite kitchen island have a purpose. There are a few bright keen kitchen utensils in the black ceramic kitchen utensil holders. They were great stocking stuffers from my family last Christmas!
The gorgeous bright green Dutch Oven was a purchase from Home Sense (same company as Home Goods but the Canadian version). It is my go-to pot when cooking and it adds a pop of colour to a black gas stove. The Rachael Ray small green casserole dish was a Christmas gift from my daughter Brittany. I use it as a spoon rest to hold my utensils when cooking so the countertop does not get too messy.
The salt and pepper shakers were a very special purchase. I bought them at a kitchen boutique when I was visiting my friend Heather from New House New Home in Stratford, Ontario. We had a lovely time going for dinner, browsing the shops and attending the theatre in this beautiful Canadian city. I always try to buy a souvenir when travelling that is a great memory piece but will also be useful when I get home. My stove is a gas Thermador range. It is an older stove but it still is fabulous to use when cooking and baking. When I previously mentioned that it was interesting watching the black granite being installed it was equally interesting watching this stove being uninstalled and reinstalled during the restoration work. That was no easy task either.
Behind the stove there is an air vent that when you push a button it can go up and down. We tend to keep the air vent in the raised position…
… and when it is lowered this is what it looks like.
On the other side of the stove is what I call my little ‘kitchen vignette’. I purchased off white dishes that I use to hold fruit and a ceramic pitcher at Home Sense filled with light green silk hydrangea flowers. The rectangular ceramic dish with a lid was a thrift store purchase for $1.00. It holds my secret stash of candy mints.
I even added the same pretty green and white colour scheme by the kitchen sink area as you can see in Useful Stylish Kitchen Sink Accessories.
So that is it. That is a tour of my black granite kitchen island with green and white décor. I do want to mention that I do not always have perfectly matching green fruit placed in the fruit bowls and plates. I actually like to keep a lot of different fruits including red apples, oranges and yellow bananas. I do not know about you but I find if fruit is very visible and accessible the family members tend to grab it more readily.
