DIY Thank You Card Tutorial Using BeFunky ~ Step-by-step photo tutorial showing how to make ‘Thank You Berry Much’ thank you cards!
I love taking photographs! It is fun looking for different subjects to photograph. It is also just as fun to improve and enhance the photographs using photo-editing tools. I also love using my photography in different creative ways like making my own note cards.
I love how these thank you cards with the greeting ‘Thank You Berry Much’ turned out. I just took a close-up photograph of some fresh strawberries. Then I used the photo editing online application BeFunky and this is what I was able to create…
The name BeFunky for this photo editing application is perfect. It has a lot of fun and funky editing options. There are a lot of free editing features and it also has an option to upgrade to gain access to even more enhanced features for an inexpensive yearly fee that is perfect for the hobbyist photographer and crafter. When I first discovered it I saw so many things that you can do to a photograph and my brain was racing with ideas and possibilities. Even though it has so many features it is really quite easy to use. With just a bit of practice it is amazing what can be created from a basic photograph. Having been a teacher I can also see children having a lot of fun with BeFunky too!
To make it easy for you I put together a step-by-step tutorial. The first thing you need to do is go to the store and buy some really pretty tasty looking strawberries. The next thing you need to do is take a close-up photograph of the strawberries.
I bought mine at Costco and I just photographed them in the large clear plastic clamshell they came in. I pointed my camera right over top of the berries so I got a top-down angle shot. You can use any kind of camera, your smart phone or your tablet. Don’t worry if the photograph isn’t super perfect. You can make it look fantastic when you are working in BeFunky. You may want to take a few shots like I did, choose the best one and save it to your desktop. This is what my original photograph looked like…
Now that you have the photograph here are the instructions for…
DIY Thank You Card Tutorial Using BeFunky
- Close-up photograph of strawberries
- BeFunky photo editing online application
- Blank cards white cards with matching envelopes.
- Paper Cutter
- Adhesive like a glue stick or rubber cement
I have provided a photograph for each step showing you how it looks in BeFunky. I also added arrows in each photograph to indicate where to look.
Step 1- Upload Your Photo
Start by going into BeFunky and click on ‘Photo Editor’. Upload the photo you want to use by clicking the upload button at the top of the screen.
Step 2 – Editing Tools Used
On the left side of your screen you will find your all of your editing tools. To make this thank you card you are only going to use the basic editing tool and the text tool.
Step 3 – Crop Your Photo
In the basic editing tool click on Crop. You will notice in my strawberry raw image some of the plastic clamshell showed through on the left side so I wanted to crop this area out. The image shows that I made the Aspect Ratio 4 x 6, the Orientation Landscape and I locked the Aspect Ratio. The height and width are provided but you will be resizing your image in Step 7. To crop your photo just click on one of the corners and drag your mouse to the part of the photo you want cropped. I wanted to make sure there was a mixture of red berries and some green stems to create variety in the photograph. When you are happy with the crop click on APPLY.
Step 4 – Beautify Your Photo
Just in the basic editing there are so many things you can do to your photograph but I am making things easy for you. I love the Beautify tool. Just by clicking on it your photograph gets freshened up a bit with a colour boost. Super easy! Don’t forget to click APPLY.
Step 5 – Vignette Your Photo
I like adding a vignette look to my photographs to provide some interest and a bit of subtle contrast. The photograph shows that I made the vignette black and with just a small amount and length. You don’t want to make the vignette look too obvious. Click APPLY.
Step 6 – Check Out Your Editing History
This is a really smart feature in BeFunky. There are no undo/redo buttons to correct an error or to fix something up. At the top of your screen you will see a History button. When you click that on it will show all of the edits that you have made. Just click on any of them and it will take you to that step during the editing process for a revisit and so you can make any changes that you want to make.
Step 7 – Resize Your Image
Resize your image to a width of 350 px. Keep the Lock Aspect Ratio checked on. When you click APPLY the height px will automatically be adjusted.
Step 8 – Adjust The Viewing Size
Now that you resized your image it looks a lot smaller on your screen. In the lower right corner you can adjust how it looks on your screen just by moving the white circle to the right. Remember that you are not changing the size of your photograph. You are just making it larger on your computer screen to make it easier to see and work with.
Step 9 – Adding Text
Click on the Text tool. Immediately you will see a rectangle show up on your photograph. This is where you will type ‘Thank You Berry Much’. On the left side you will see the Text tool window with all of the font, size, colour and positioning choices. I chose the font Harrington with a white font colour and black outline. Just click on the up arrow to increase the font size to a size that looks good on your image. You can center your message in the paragraph window. You can also space you letters a little further apart so the message does not look all squished up. At the bottom of the Text Properties you can also place your message in the middle and center of the photograph so everything looks nice and even.
Step 10 – Flattening And Downloading Your Edited Photograph
Click the Flatten button in the upper left corner. This sets all of your edits in place. Now you are done and ready to download your photograph. The download button is in the same top area as the upload and history button. Rename and save your gorgeous photograph to your computer.
Step 11 –Printing Your Photograph
You have some options here. You can have multiple copies of your photograph professionally printed as a photograph in a glossy or matte finish. I chose to print mine on the home computer on plain white computer paper. I quite like the look. I took things one step further to save paper. I created a Word Document and inserted two copies of my photograph. If you click on your photograph and go to Text Wrap and then click on Tight, it will allow you to move your image around so you can place two on one page.
Step 12 – Trimming And Mounting Photographs
I recommend using a paper cutter to trim each photograph so you get nice straight lines. I like to use rubber cement for this kind of gluing but a glue stick will give a nice clean look too.
So that is it! You can plan to keep these DIY Thank You Cards to use yourself. Or you can give them away as gifts. As you can see they are very doable and fun to make. Just wrap a pretty red ribbon around ten thank you cards and envelopes and you now have a gorgeous unique and useful gift!
Just to let you know all of the photographs including this collage were all edited and created using BeFunky.
