Happy Easter Decorated Easter Eggs ~ These paper maché eggs covered with an Easter greeting are a fun and easy Easter craft for all ages to make!
It is amazing all of the creative ways to decorate Easter eggs. I like this idea because paper maché eggs are decorated instead of working with real eggs. These Happy Easter Decorated Easter Eggs can be stored and brought out every Easter. It is a very versatile craft for you to create your own style because any font, colour and phrase can be used. It is also quite inexpensive and very easy to make. I love making crafts that create a fabulous result but were not too complicated or labour intensive to create. It is very easy for children and adults alike to make their own!
Have you noticed sometimes when making crafts that it takes a while to find all of the materials needed to make the craft? Fortunately for this craft I did not have to go out and buy any materials because I had everything in the house. I had some extra paper maché eggs that I had bought last year at Michaels for another Easter egg decorating craft. I also had the decoupage glue (Mod Podge) and I just used basic white printer paper to make the word strips.
I made the word strips by typing Happy Easter on the computer using the font Brush Script MT size 20 in a teal blue colour. This is where you can personalize your choices by using any phrase, colour or font that suits your style. That being said I did provide for you a printable in PDF form of what I made that you are welcome to download and print. I found it took about one sheet of cut word strips to decorate each egg.
I also want to comment on one more thing. You will notice that some of my paper maché eggs were painted with white acrylic paint and some were not. I chose to see if this step was necessary before covering the egg with the white strips. After completing the project I recommend that you paint the eggs first and give it a white coating. Even though it is hard to tell you can see a bit of the brown. I found it was also easier to cover the egg working with a white base.
Here are the instructions for how to make them so you can make your own too…
How To Make Happy Easter Decorated Easter Eggs
- paper maché craft eggs
- white acrylic craft paint
- printable of ‘Happy Easter’ phrase printed on white computer paper
- ½ inch size artist paintbrush
- decoupage glue (Mod Podge)
- empty plastic egg carton
Paint each paper maché egg with white acrylic paint. Let dry thoroughly.
Print off the Happy Easter Word Strips printable or make your own on the computer. Cut each phrase into individual strips. It is works best to trim as close to the words as possible. The strips don’t have to have perfect straight edges but it is recommended to strive for a consistent size.
Adhere the word strips onto the paper maché egg with decoupage glue using a paintbrush. I found it worked best to work in small sections. First apply the glue, then place a few strips in an overlapping fashion over the glued area and lastly apply another layer of glue over top of the word strips. You will also have to smooth out the wrinkles while you are working around the curved surface. You will not get a completely smooth look but the bit of texture that does show adds to the appearance of the Easter greeting decorated Easter eggs.
After the paper maché egg has been completely covered with the word strips let it dry thoroughly.
Apply one more coat of decoupage glue all over the covered egg and let dry thoroughly. During the drying stage I placed the decoupage eggs in an empty plastic egg carton. Half through the drying time I turned the eggs over so the other half of the egg could dry. I found it took about 24 hours for the egg to completely dry.
As I mentioned previously this Easter egg decorating craft is very versatile. Not only can you change the font and colour used but you can also change the phrase or words. If you are doing this craft with children they can make their own egg with their name decoupaged on the egg. That would make a fun memory egg to bring out every Easter!
So that is it! Here are some beauty shots of how I am showcasing these Happy Easter Decorated Easter Eggs. The white square pedestal plate was a thrift store find and the teal blue floral acrylic fillers were a dollar store purchase.
I do want to share that the idea for this craft was inspired by another very talented and blogger. Heather’s gave her decoupaged eggs a completely different look by printing off, cutting up and gluing a classic French poem on the eggs. Her DIY French Script Easter Eggs are very stylish as is her blog Setting for Four.
