Glammed Up Plastic Storage Drawers ~ Easily turn basic plastic drawer units into something more decorative and stylish!
I have to admit I think plastic storage drawers are a fabulous idea! They are useful, versatile, easy to keep clean, pretty durable and really inexpensive. I have had my plastic storage drawer for quite a few years. I use it to store some of my craft supplies in my craft room.
I have a bit of a like/don’t like relationship with it though. I like it for all of the reasons I mentioned above as well as the fact that it’s transparent so you can easily see what you are looking for. What I don’t like is that it’s made of plastic and you can see everything making it look plain and very non-stylish.
My inspiration to decorate my plastic storage drawers came from Pinterest. There are loads of wonderful ideas for using different materials like scrapbook paper, Modge Podge and fabric to give it a bit of style and colour. I knew I wanted to glam up my plastic storage drawers but I wasn’t sure how. I wanted it to be a pretty easy project to complete, long lasting and not too expensive. I also wanted to add my own personal touch that I had not seen anywhere else.
I like a bit of sparkle here and there in my décor and I came across this glitter craft tape at Michaels. It is removable, reusable and repositionable.
It had everything I was looking for except I felt it was a bit pricey compared to other options. I had to buy two rolls but I used discount coupons to help cut down the cost. The total ended up being around $13.00 and I have a lot of this glittery border leftover for another project. I even used it on a plastic storage drawer I use for computer paper.
The instructions for glammed up plastic storage drawers are super easy. It really is a 30-minute or less project and you end up with some pretty stylish looking storage.
Instructions for Glammed Up Plastic Storage Drawers
Step 1 – Make sure the surface is clean before applying the self-adhesive border.
Step 2 – Measure and cut the amount needed to cover the front of each drawer. I used one strip for the narrow drawers and two strips for the wider drawers.
I guess you could also apply the self-adhesive border to the sides of the drawers but I didn’t think it was necessary because you don’t really see it.
Simply peel off the border and apply to the outside of each drawer.
Step 3 –
Label each drawer. I made the chalkboard labels you see and the instructions are here How To Make Your Own Chalkboard Labels. I just used a white pencil crayon to label each chalkboard label.
Keeping it real… even though the labels are self-adhesive I had to use glue to really secure them to the glitter border. If you use a border with a smooth surface you shouldn’t have to follow this step.
This is a before photograph. As you can see it looks pretty plain and very non-stylish.

Super easy to do! I love the look of the glammed up plastic storage drawers now! I really love how the pink border looks awesome with the black chalkboard labels.
Yup… the colour scheme in my craft room is a Granny Smith Apple Green. It’s an upstairs room that faces north and I wanted a fun colour that really made a statement. The wall colour with the white furniture and the glittery pink adds a nice stylish touch!
I have been slowly organizing and decorating my craft room and sharing it here on the blog. Here are some other posts that you might find interesting too…
I am so pleased with how the pinks in the fabric I used in the two fabric memo boards I made coordinate perfectly with the glittery pink border I used on the glammed up plastic storage drawers!
