Inexpensive DIY Drawer Organizers ~ Make your own custom inexpensive drawer organizers from tissue boxes, self-adhesive vinyl covering and cardstock!
I have a large drawer at the desk station in the kitchen. It is a great place to house things like pens, pencils, note cards, scissors, tape and other office like items. I originally had a collection of plastic baskets I had picked up at the dollar store. The only good thing about these baskets as that they were very inexpensive. But they were too lightweight. So every time I opened the drawer to get something all of the baskets would shift and even flip over a bit meaning that I was constantly readjusting them. Do you have that problem too? The other issue was that the basket sides had quite large holes making it easy for items like paper clips and pencils to poke through creating a perpetual messy drawer.
Since it’s quite a large drawer it could hold quite a few different organizers. I shopped around to see if I could find a better option but I didn’t see anything that I liked for the price I was willing to pay. So I came up with an idea to make my own!
These ones are made from repurposed tissue boxes! They were so easy to work with! The problem was it took a bit of time to collect enough tissue boxes but that got solved when my husband picked up a nasty virus and was quite ill for about five days. I felt badly for him but secretly I was happy that he went through about five boxes of tissues making it easier for me to finish this organizing project!
I chose to go with just plain white with a black coloured bottom rather than using a patterned covering. The reason is I like things to be uncluttered to keep things more organized. I figured the drawer would already be filled with an assortment of items that I wanted to keep it so that they were easy to locate and retrieve. I covered the boxes with a vinyl like self-adhesive covering that can be bought at stores like Walmart and Canadian Tire. I used black cardstock paper that I bought at Michaels in the scrapbooking section covered in clear self-adhesive laminate to make removable inserts for the bottom of the organizers. This way I could keep my DIY drawer organizers clean and neat over time by just pulling out the inserts and giving them a quick wipe with a damp cloth without damaging them.
I made two sizes of drawer organizers. The larger size was made from the base and the small size was made from cutting the ends of the tissue box.es I didn’t do this but you can also place a small organizer inside a large one when organizing your drawer because it will fit perfectly!
Materials For Making Inexpensive DIY Drawer Organizers:
- Empty tissue boxes
- White self-adhesive shelf liner
- Black cardstock paper
- Clear self-adhesive clear laminate
- Transparent tape
- Binder clips
Instructions For Making Inexpensive DIY Drawer Organizers:
Trim tissue boxes. I measure two inches from the bottom for both the large and small organizer but you may want to change this depending upon your tissue box and drawer size. Tape the sides of the trimmed tissue box with one piece of tape per corner.
Cover trimmed tissue box with white self-adhesive covering. There are lots of different ways to do this. I cut the first piece the width of the tissue box and the width of the self-adhesive roll. I placed the box in the center of the cut paper and wrapped it around the outside, inside and bottom of the box. It was OK if it didn’t quite cover the inside bottom of the box. Then I applied a second piece by measuring the length of the tissue box and wrapping the self-adhesive covering the same way. The last thing I did was cut a piece the same size of the bottom of the box and placed it on the inside bottom. This piece nicely covered all of the ends made by the other two pieces and gave it a nice finished look.
Cut a piece of the black card stock the same size of the bottom of the tissue box. I actually trimmed it very slightly so it fit easily into the bottom. Cover this insert with the clear self-adhesive laminate. I did this by generously doubling the size of the insert, placing the insert on one half folding over the other half and trimming the extra all the way around.
Before I placed the completed collection of drawer organizers in the drawer I put a black no-slip drawer liner on the bottom. To make sure my new drawer organizers didn’t shift every time I opened the drawer I connected each divider with these silver binder clips. They look quite pretty and do a really good job of keeping things secure!
This is what they look like with the various items. Now this is organized!
That’s it! These Inexpensive DIY Drawer Dividers were super easy to make, they look so pretty every time I open the drawer, they will be easy to keep clean and they work really well keeping everything organized in my kitchen desk drawer!
