Fresh garlic is a widely used flavourful and aromatic vegetable used in all kinds of dishes. It can be eaten fresh in salads and cooked up in casseroles and soups.
Garlic comes in lots of different forms and I have tried several of them. I have bought the minced kind that comes in a jar, frozen cloves and even dehydrated. ~Start with the best by buying garlic that is fresh. Look for firm compact heads. Avoid garlic bulbs that look and feel papery, shrivelled or about to sprout. I have to admit that I now buy garlic in the fresh organic foods section. This garlic just seems to be fresher and the higher cost is not that much.
~Keep the bulb in tact and pull cloves off as needed. This helps to keep the cloves stay fresher for longer.
~Don’t store garlic bulbs in the fridge or the freezer. It changes the taste and the texture.
~Don’t store garlic bulbs in a sealed airtight container or in a sealed plastic bag. This method will promote mold growth.
~Store garlic bulbs in a cool, dry, dark place.
~Store garlic in a container with holes for ventilation or something as simple as a brown paper bag. But keep reading to find out what I use.
~Fresh garlic lasts for 2-3 weeks so I only buy enough for that time period.
After considering all of these do’s and don’ts, this is the best way to store fresh garlic! I keep it in a black fabric pouch I bought in the craft aisle at the dollar store. The pouch hangs on a hook in the pantry next to my spices and herb containers. I keep the date the garlic was purchased on an index card cut in half inserted in the bag just so I can keep track of how long I have had the garlic bulbs.
The black fabric pouch looks a lot more decorative hanging in the pantry than a brown paper bag. The black colour keeps things dark for the garlic bulbs and the fabric keeps things airy so the bulbs don’t get moldy before I want to use it. The final good thing about storing it in a fabric pouch is it is super inexpensive and super easy to do making it truly the best way to store fresh garlic!
