How To Organize And Store Your Scrapbook Embellishments And Stickers ~ Very easy, attractive and inexpensive tips and ideas for how to organize and store your scrapbook embellishments and stickers!
I love scrapbooking. It is a wonderful craft where I can be creative. I see it as having an infinite number of possibilities. It is also so much fun to work with all of the different kinds of embellishments… stickers, gems, borders, buttons, flowers… and so much more!
I tend to keep an eye out for sales and will pick up something every so often to add to the embellishment collection. Sorry to go off topic here but I just love saying the word ‘embellishment’. Not sure why, but it just sounds so important and essential to have in your project. I will snoop around craft stores, big box stores, dollar stores and I will even check out the craft section in thrift stores. Believe it or not, I have found some pretty neat things for hardly any money. I’m a little over the moon when this happens because embellishments can be pretty pricey!
How does one store all of these lovely things so they don’t take up a lot of space and so they are super handy to find when you want to use them in that special project?
I have tried a few different ways of storing my embellishment collection. I tried keeping them in their original packaging and storing them in one big bin. I have tried storing them in drawers in a desk. Another system that I tried which is really a good one but it didn’t work for me is to store them in page protectors in a binder.
I’m super happy with this storage system and would love to share it with you. But before I get started I want to share some storage rules that I use as guidelines. I much prefer transparent storage if the items are being stored in a cupboard or a closet and are out of sight. I write more extensively about this is another blog post. However, if the items are being stored where they are part of the décor such as in an open bookcase, I much prefer decorative storage where you cannot see what is inside.
Here Is How To Organize And Store Your Scrapbook Embellishments And Stickers…
Since my embellishment collection is being stored in an old inexpensive Billy bookcase from IKEA I chose these white photo storage boxes that I bought on sale at Michaels. I ‘m going off topic again, but you have to love IKEA. I bought this bookcase for my oldest daughter’s nursery when she was a baby. She is now twenty-five years old. Since then it’s been used several different ways for different purposes in different rooms. I almost donated it but changed my mind and I’m glad I did. It is perfect the way it is being used now.
I labeled each box on the lid and on the side using labels from Martha Stewart’s Collection and my label maker. The boxes are sitting sideways on the shelves because that is the only way they fit. The boxes are organized and labeled in the following way:
- Stickers A-M
- Stickers N-Z
- Alphabet Stickers
How did I organize the embellishments inside the boxes? Let’s start with the stickers. I gathered all of the sticker packages and separated them into categories. All of the stickers that fit in each category were then put in a re-sealable bag.
The types of categories I created and were put in the box labeled Stickers A-M include: Animals, Baby, Birthday, Butterflies & Flowers, Canada, Disney, Driving Easter, Family, Fashion, Food 7 Wine, Halloween, Home.
The types of categories I created and were put in the box labeled Stickers N-Z include: School, Shapes, Sports, St. Patrick’s Day, Summer, Travel, Wedding, Winter, Words.
I have so many things related to Christmas that all of these items were put in their own box. Not only do I have purchased stickers but I also save all of the used gift tags and pretty Christmas cards if I think I can use them again in another craft project.
The box labeled Borders just has some borders I purchased in there and because they are a little big for the box, I just gently plopped them in.
I didn’t really organize the Alphabet Stickers because when you think about it, what‘s the point of alphabetizing alphabet stickers? They are just lined up inside and are very easy to go through and access.
Inside the box labeled Embellishments are an assortment of fun stuff to add to projects. These include shapes and designs, flowers, gems, buttons, blingy stickers, tags, brads, chips…. etc. These are just lined up in a box in a random order.
At the front of each bag I used a blank index card and a black marking pen to clearly label what is inside.
This organizing system has made it super easy for me for several reasons. I can easily locate my various embellishments when I want to work with them and when I finished with them, they are easy to return to their proper place because everything is so clearly organized, labeled and accessible. The final reason is that when I buy something new to add to the collection, I know immediately where it is going to go.
This is a system that I have figured out through trial and error that really works for me. But I know there are many other ways to organize and store your craft and scrapbooking embellishments. Feel free to share and comment. I so love learning new ideas!
