When It Rains It Pours! ~ I live in an area with very diverse and unpredictable weather throughout all four seasons. It can be very hot and dry and sometimes When It Rains It Pours!
It is quite hard to garden in these weather conditions but I really enjoy it despite all of the weather challenges.
Persevere. Go with the flow. Celebrate whatever successfully grows each growing season.
We had a pretty mild winter but a very long one that finally ended the beginning of May. Then it was really dry with really hot temperatures. Now the rains have come. There’s about 100 mm expected in the next 24 hours.
When It Rains It Pours…
I have three rain barrels that are now capturing all of the moisture coming from the sky. There isn’t a picture of me out in the rain in my raincoat and rain boots but I have been outside trying to empty my rain barrels and redistribute the lovely fresh rain as it is coming down. I have been pouring the water all over my gardens using my trusty plastic watering can.
My very close friend of many years who now lives on the other side of Canada in the beautiful province of Quebec is staying with me right now for an extended visit. She has an absolutely stunning garden back home. I think she clearly thinks I am a little crazy for being outside watering all of my plants using my watering can with water from my rain barrel while it’s pouring rain outside. But I know plants flourish with lots of water and while there’s lots of it I am going to make sure they get the extra moisture just to help them along. It also doesn’t make sense to me to let that lovely rain water pour out of the spout of the rain barrels when all of my trees, shrubs and flowers would love an extra fresh drink.
I had fun taking some photographs of the inside of each of my three rain barrels. Here is what they look like today while it is pouring rain.
These are some bedding out plants that I bought for my plant pots in the backyard. But they are sitting on the patio waiting to be planted. I’m not sure when the rain is going to stop so I’m not sure when these lovely plants will get planted. I might just have to go out in the rain in my raincoat and rain boots to get the job done.
Just wondering what your weather and gardening challenges are. What are your thoughts about me outside in the rain watering my plants with water from the rain barrels?
Update: After I wrote this blog the rain did not stop. As a matter of fact it kept raining …. and raining … and along with the late Spring runoff from the Rocky Mountains created a catastrophic flooding situation. We were not seriously affected by the flood but there were many people who were devastated by this flood. I have a view of the Bow River from my kitchen window and this was what it looked like:
