How to Display Christmas Cards

the-joyful-edition-logo-20121The Prologue

This is one of those posts that is so much fun because it is part of another Collectively Creative project thanks to my dear blogging friend Kelly over at Cupcakes, Cobwebs and Crayons. It was her innovative idea several months ago to invite a collection of bloggers like myself to post a blog on the same day at the same time around the same theme. The theme for this collective project is ‘Joyfulness’ which is so timely for this wonderful time of year. So at the end of this blog I invite you to click away and visit all of the sites of the participating bloggers to gain some wonderful ideas and insights for this very special theme.

This is also such a timely post for me because today is my birthday! It has been interesting having a birthday so close to Christmas for a number of reasons. My birthday has always been sandwiched or in conflict with other December activities and responsibilities. It has been a common occurrence to have to celebrate my special day at the same time as a Christmas concert, Christmas party or final exam. Oh well. I have to admit my family members and friends have always been pretty awesome at taking time to celebrate my special day in a special way. I am pretty lucky.

The Situation

This is the season of sending and receiving Christmas cards (and in my case birthday cards).

The Problem

I have always struggled with how to showcase all of the wonderful cards my family and I receive every year with messages of joy. If you go on Pinterest there are some great ideas for displaying them with most of them being to hang the cards on the wall in a decorative manner.

I have to admit that displaying them on the wall is not quite one of my favourite ideas for two reasons. Firstly, I don’t really have the wall space and the second reason is that I want to have the cards accessible so I can take some time to carefully read and enjoy every card when I have time and the ‘busy-ness’ of the season is well… not so busy. With each celebration my lovely mother-n-law would take some time to read and savour every card that she received and I thank her for modeling this truly special gesture.

The Solution

Think of how cut flowers are showcased which is in a vase. Why not do the same with greeting cards?

I purchased a rectangular clear vase at Michaels and attached a plaid ribbon around the width and the length with clear tape. Then I made a label saying “Joyful greetings from…” which I taped onto the ribbon. I just made it on Word with the font ‘Edwardian Script’ and printed it off on cardstock white paper. Then I accented the label by creating a border with red glitter. Super easy and super quick to do!

Very easy and fun to create.

A simple and decorative way to display and have easily accessible Christmas cards (and birthday cards) this coming joyful season!

  1. What a sweet idea, Thea! And Happy, Happy Birthday!!! We have SO many December birthdays in our family. My dad’s is the 30th, my mom’s the 8th, and my godchildren the 26th (which I think might be THE hardest December birthday!) and the 31st! So I understand how difficult it can sometimes be. I always make sure to buy birthday wrapping paper for their gifts so that they don’t get birthday presents in Christmas wrapping!! Thank you so very much for being a part of The Joyful Edition!!

    • I just love being part of this collaboration! I am so enjoying being a contributor and what a great way to connect with other bloggers! You are busy at Christmas time with all of the birthdays. Mine is the only one. I also really appreciate when my family wraps the present with a birthday theme. Merry Christmas! ~ Thea

  2. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I really like this! I have the same thought about my current cards — I like them accessible to be able to read and re-read them. We keep them in a basket, but I LOVE the idea of a vase with ribbon!

  3. Happy Bday to you my dear!! I know what you are talking about! my birthday is dec 10th ;) and I think it’s even more difficult for my Rachel since she was born dec 23tr (best time ever to give birth at the hospital though lol!) and my mom always hated having her birthday on dec 26th since she always had her birthday gifts wrapped in xmas paper as a child with the leftover xmas cake as birthday cake… What a nice idea for having xmas card near at hand! Hope you have a very special day!

    • Thank you for the birthday wishes! The 23rd is a tough day because it is so close to Christmas. Having a birthday after Christmas isn’t great either but one can take advantage of all the after Christmas sales. I had my birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper and Christmas cards saying Happy Birthday on them as a child too. Then I finally made it clear that it had to have a birthday theme. So glad you liked the ideas for displaying the Christmas cards. Merry Christmas! ~ Thea

  4. Happy birthday!! And thanks for the great suggestion. I love how tidy and neat this approach is. I’m not a big fan of putting cards on the walls either so right now they’re just in a heap on my kitchen counter. ;)

  5. Happy birthday, Thea! Hope you have a wonderful day!

I love this idea because I usually just keep the cards we get in a pile on the piano. It’s difficult to see how cute they are! Such an easy and fun idea — I may put my ace crafter (that would be my daughter) on the case! Merry Christmas to you!

    • I had never thought of that living in Canada where we have the fireplace going and the central heating on because it is usually quite chilly outside at Christmas time. I like the idea because it reduces the clutter. But your reasoning also makes so much sense. Thanks for stopping by and sharing! Merry Christmas to you, Thea

  6. Happy (belated) birthday, Thea! December babies are the best. ;)

Love your post! We currently have our cards hung on the walls but I like your idea much better. It would be super cute to place the case on a coffee table so people can browse when they come over. :)

  7. I’m so sorry that I missed your actual birthday, Thea, but I hope you had a wonderful day! My daughter’s birthday is the 24th, so I definitely know the way December birthdays are sandwiched in among everything else! But we have always made sure that she had the best of parties and celebrations despite the inconvenience! I’m busy right now trying to prepare for a full family birthday dinner on the 24th. And then the next day we just do it all again! LOL!

Your Christmas card display is very pretty! And such a good idea. I’ve been putting mine in a basket, but unless you know where to look, they get lost! I think a glass container is a great idea.
